Several sources refer to the Republic as a New England Shipwreck, yet the coordinates given are latitude 40.2600 longitude 73.100 which seems to me to be off New Jersey when I plot it - very far out of course . I noticed that the courts that issued some of the rulings seem to be Massachusetts or New Jersey. Can the Republic be considered to be off the New Jersey coast?

Hey, she's off: Manhattan, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Norfolk, Virginia; Miami Beach, Florida; and Southampton, UK. Pick any land bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Out in the North Atlantic, it's just a matter of distance. However, the closest land is Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The Republic is about 50 miles South.

So, all-in-all, a New England shipwreck is probably more correct. She's about 6 miles SE of the Doria which is, I guess, predominantly considered a Jersey wreck.
